Info you might want if you are visiting Botswana:

To enter the country you will need to give an address - ours is:
Plot 5120 Ext 10 Gaborone

You should also carry our phone numbers found in contact info

The airport has no public transport.  Someone needs to meet you there.  Make sure you arrange this.

Cell phones:  The ones you bring from North America will likely not work here - unless you have an expensive one that uses SIM cards and it at least tri band, and is unlocked.  Your charger may also not work here.  Check this out before you bring one.  However, cell phones are used extensively here.

Internet:  There are Internet cafes.  We also have what is locally known as high speed (ASDL) but is not what a North Americans might think of with these terms.  However it is always on and better than dailup.

Travel info: There are lots of web sites in South Africa for accommodation and transportation.  Air fare is cheap within South Africa, but not so for the rest of Africa (Including Botswana).  We tend to use the Lonely Planet books, of which a new South African edition came out in February 2007.  Air tickets seem to be a magical art.  It seems that prices into Gaborone are sometimes as cheap or cheaper than Johannesburg.  Sometimes not.  There are many good buses between Gaborone and Johannesburg every day, but getting from the airport to the bus station is not totally straight forward - though easier and cheaper if you are spending a night in Johannesburg.

Power: We use 220 volts, 50 cycle here.  Our plugs are a combination of South African and British.  For most people it will be easier to get adapters (one plug type to another) here.  Many commercial adapters available in North America do not have a South African option - or it is miss labelled.  However converters (one voltage to another) are not as easily available but also tend to be heavy. Check your equipment, many items that you might expect to travel with have power supplies that you can travel with.

Availability of items: Almost anything you need is available here - at least in Gaborone.  If you have specific questions ask us.  However it is usually unwise to arrive anywhere immediately needing supplies or crucial items. Electronic/computer items tend to cost more here than in the West, though this seems to be changing.
